Leading up to Opera Roanoke's Cycles of My Being performance in May the company will feature the composer and lyricist of the work in a special evening celebrating black voices in music and poetry.

 

The evening will feature a poetry reading by MacArthur Genius Award recipient, Terrance Hayes, who served as the 2017-18 poetry editor for New York Times magazine and has garnered much critical acclaim for his work in poetry and criticism.

 

Joining Mr. Hayes in the ranks of MacArthur Genius Grant Award recipients and critically acclaimed artists, composer Tyshawn Sorey will also be in attendance to talk about his work and you'll hear one of his most recently premiered vocal works, Songs of Death.

 

A brief interview with both artists will follow.

 

Doors open at 7:30 pm, show starts at 8:00 pm.
