Tour Description
Check it out: we've got a NEW & IMPROVED walking tour! The Downtown Roanoke LGBTQ History Walking Tour, which first launched in 2016, is back, new & improved, as a free ninety-minute walking tour exploring Roanoke’s queer past. This revised tour includes a larger focus on African American and transgender voices and stories.
Tour stops may include: Roanoke’s late-nineteenth-century red-light district; popular cruising and sex work zones of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s; several historic gay bars and dance clubs; as well as places associated with gay rights activism.
Tour will begin at 2pm sharp. Meet inside the City Market building. If the building is closed, please meet your guide on the Salem Avenue side of the building. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes.
Our tours are also available for private groups, school groups, college classes, non-profit organizations, and others. For more information, see our Tour FAQ at: http://lgbthistory.pages.roanoke.edu/walking-tour/
