The Historical Society of Western Virginia is pleased to announce the return of the Kegley Lecture Series. This series, founded by George and Louise Kegley, is normally held at Christ Lutheran Church, but this opening lecture will be held in the auditorium of the O. Winston Link Museum/History Museum of Western Virginia, and admission will be FREE.

The speaker will be Trish White-Boyd, Roanoke's Vice Mayor, who will discuss the efforts to highlight “the hidden histories of Roanoke's African American experience.” White-Boyd will explain Roanoke Hidden Histories, a volunteer-led effort in partnership with the Richmond-based Hidden in Plain Site (HiPS) and under the leadership of White-Boyd and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, with the goal of bringing the overlooked history to life. The project acknowledges and documents painful and troubling aspects of black and white shared history as well as celebrates Black achievement in the community.

The group's current project is to bring recognition to the life of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells furthered life-saving medical research. A dignified statue of Lacks is in the works and will be placed in Henrietta Lacks Plaza in downtown Roanoke.

Join us on Tuesday, February 28 at 7pm.
