If the pandemic has taught artists anything, it’s that this season can make or break you. Loss of income, hiatus from live shows in front of packed crowds, and creative drought have impacted many musicians. However, for Macklyn, this time prompted him make the personal soundtrack to his life during covid. Life + Love, Macklyn’s debut album, explores topics such as forgiveness, relationships, self-care, and love all under grace. “This album has become very dear to me, as it is a project that I feel embodies myself, my faith, my musical foundation and my love for R&B best” Macklyn says. He collaborated with a team of producers including Ah Beats, Robert Nanton, EssBe, J Rhodan, Dave “Imperial” Walker, and Grammy award winning producer 808-Ray to color the album with vibrant R&B, Neo-Soul, and hip hop fusion sounds and reflects facets of those cultures respectively. The cover art was created by graphic designer Artis Fresh (Lansing, Michigan) portraying a pensive Macklyn in living color, much like the songs on the album. Other artwork was handled by designer Peyton Stanley.
Penned during a time where he battled depression during covid, the ride along anthem, “Live” reminds listeners to cherish the beauty of living as a gift amidst tough times. Macklyn worked with Ivan Vazquez to design merch to further the song’s message. The song features Michigan-based rhymer Sareem Poems and Darien Brockington of the Foreign Exchange. Sareem Poems encourages listeners with the lyric: "If you ain't okay, know that that's okay."
