Downtown Roanoke is home to 5 breweries. Each has their own unique brewing style and feel but all of them are sure to show you a good time. So what are your options? We'll break them down so you know what you can expect when you visit.
Big Lick Brewing Company - 409 Salem Ave SW
Brewery Overview: Downtown Roanoke's premier microbrewery, taproom and beer garden specializing in craft beer with an emphasis on quality and variety. Open 7 days a week.
Outdoor space? They have the largest outdoor area/beer garden in Downtown Roanoke featuring an outdoor stage for live music and numerous tables and benches for seating. Cornhole is always available.
Pet friendly? Yes, well-trained, leashed pooches are allowed inside and outside.
Is there food available? Bring your own or order from your table from one of the neighboring restaurants and have it delivered to you.
Events at Big Lick Brewing -
- Mondays - they offer specials for folks in education, hospitality, first responders, and healthcare workers.
- Tuesdays - they host Music Bingo with prizes awarded for winners of each round and pub runs with Fleet Feet Roanoke.
- Wednesdays - they host Roanoke Riders bicycle group ride (open to all).
- Thursdays - every other week they have trivia with prizes for 1st-3rd places. On the alternate Thursdays they have live music.
- Fridays & Saturdays - Live music is king on Friday and Saturday evenings.
- Sunday Fundays - More live music some Sundays.
Golden Cactus Brewing - 214 5th Street SW
Brewery Overview: Golden Cactus serves specialty craft beers brewed in Downtown Roanoke. With over ten years brewing experience, head brewer Evan Graham likes to keep an ever-changing tap list of hand-crafted and creative brews.
When can you visit? They're open 7 days a week.
Outdoor space? Golden Cactus' vibrant and kid-friendly patio space includes picnic tables, a sand-box, space for cornhole, and a refurbished shipping container for lounging and selfies.
Pet friendly? The brewery is pet-friendly, both inside the taproom and on the outdoor patio, to friendly pets. No aggressive behavior or excessive barking will be tolerated.
Is there food available? FoodHut Roanoke, is located on the patio of Golden Cactus and serves a range of menu items Wednesday-Sunday evenings at the brewery. Brunch is served on Sundays from 10am - 2pm. The brewery serves beermosas to accompany menu items like chicken and waffles, grit bowls, and coffee and donuts from local coffee shop Roasters Next Door.
Parking - In addition to street parking along Salem and Rorer Avenue, Golden Cactus has a gravel parking lot for its patrons at the corner of Campbell Ave and 5th Street, right behind Aesy's restaurant.
Events at Golden Cactus -
- Wednesdays - They co-host "West-End Wednesdays" from 5:00-8:30pm. This collaboration with Gatewood Rose and FoodHut offers a weekly mini maker's market featuring local artists, farmers, musicians, and vendors on their shared patios.
- Sundays - They open at 10am to serve beermosas alongside FoodHut's brunch specials.
- More - Golden Cactus regularly hosts other events and concerts (info can be found on their website). They also host private parties and events. Email them at goldencactusbrewing@gmail.com for details.
Olde Salem Brewing Company - 315 Market St
Brewery Overview: Their first satellite location, on the Historic Roanoke City Market, features a blend of experimental small batch brews produced on site, as well as the tried and true classics from their original Main Street Salem location.
When can you visit? They're open 7 days a week.
Outdoor space? Patio space is coming soon!
Pet friendly? They welcome all well behaved pets. They also have pet merchandise available and are working on a "Pet Wall" to feature Olde Salem Brewing furry guests.
Is there food available? You can order Well Hung Vineyards Flatbread Pizzas delivered right to you. Jack Brown's Burgers can be ordered for pick up plus more options coming soon.
Events at Olde Salem -
- Mondays - Mug Club Members get $2 off every beer all day.
- Tuesdays - Music Bingo is on tap every Tuesday.
- Wednesdays - Test your knowledge and see how you fare during Trivia night. The 3rd Wednesday of each month features a Comedy Show.
- Thursdays - They host PAR Mobile Golf and Happy Hour from 4pm - 6pm plus and RunAbout Sports Roanoke Pub Runs.
- Fridays & Saturdays - They feature live music .
Starr Hill Roanoke Pilot Brewery & Side Stage - 6 Old Whitmore Ave
Brewery Overview: Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage showcases new beers and new music in the Starr City of the South.
When can you visit? They're open 7 days a week.
Outdoor space? They have an outdoor shaded patio open every day. Once a month they extend their outdoor space for Can Garden Weekends featuring canned beer and live music.
Pet friendly? Furry friends are welcome to hang out on their outdoor patio. They're not allowed inside the brewery.
Is there food available? They sell pimento cheese and chips. Customers are welcome to bring food or have it delivered to them at the taproom.
Events at Starr Hill -
- Tuesdays - every other Tuesday they have Trivia.
- Fridays & Saturdays - They feature live music
- More - Can Garden Weekends are once a month. Trivia every other Tuesday.
Three Notch'd Craft Kitchen & Brewery - 24 Campbell Ave SE
Brewery Overview: The brewpub is located in the heart of Downtown Roanoke directly across from Center in the Square. Their kitchen specializes in creating locally-sourced, beer-infused dishes designed to complement the season as well as what’s on tap.
When can you visit? They're open every day but Tuesday.
Outdoor space? They have a small sidewalk patio that's great for couples.
Pet friendly? Yes pets are welcome on the seasonal patio. No pets are allowed inside the restaurant.
Is there food available? They have a full menu with options for everyone. They feature locally-sourced items and focus on beef-infused dishes. They also have Brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 11am-2pm.
Events at Three Notch'd -
They have a rotating seasonal schedule including trivia and live music. Every Thursday is "First Tap" where they release a new beer each week.
